Alessandro Castelli e Rudy Fantin si incontrano in sala di registrazione. Decidono di formare un duo per lavorare su brani originali e brani dei grandi compositori della storia del jazz (C. Mingus, T. Monk, A. Ibrahim, R. Weston, C. Haden….).
Nasce il CD “Spiritual”, che viene proposto in trio con la collaborazione di Filippo Valnegri.

Recorded at New Art Recording Studio in Uboldo (VA) and Mixed by Stefano Amerio at Artesuono in Cavalicco (UD), Italy in 2015.
“When two musicians play the music they love, but mostly love the music they play, they give us that glimpse of humanity and spontaneity that all art forms should express. This album represents exactly that: a pairing that manages to catch our attention and help us travel towards places that would be usually unreachable. Rudy Fantin on the piano and Rhodes and Alessandro Castelli on the trombone and euphonium converse with extreme ease and honesty in a language that, even if rooted in Afroamerican music, from Gospel to Jazz, takes on new flavours, opening unexpected windows on other musical scents, always with discretion and refinement, addressing very diverse themes and composers that, thanks to the hand skills, the swing, and creativity of the two performers, assume a common denominator. In a world where by now fashions dictate directions, unfortunately also in the arts, that should instead be free from any kind of conditioning, listening to Fantin and Castelli becomes a breath of fresh air, as you can clearly feel the deep love for music and the healthy pleasure in having fun with the notes. “Quando due musicisti suonano la musica che amano ma soprattutto
amano la musica che suonano, ci donano quello scorcio di umanità e di
spontaneità che tutte le forme d’arte dovrebbero saper esprimere. Questo
CD rappresenta esattamente questo: un binomio che riesce a catturare la
nostra attenzione e ci aiuta a viaggiare verso lidi che normalmente
sarebbero irraggiungibili. Rudy Fantin al pianoforte e al Rhodes e
Alessandro Castelli al trombone e all’euphonium dialogano con estrema
facilità e sincerità in un linguaggio che pur affondando le proprie
radici nella musica afroamericana, dal Gospel al Jazz, assume sapori
nuovi aprendo finestre inattese su altri profumi musicali, sempre con
misura ed eleganza, affrontando temi e autori molto diversi tra loro che
però, grazie alle mani, allo swing e alla fantasia dei due interpreti
assumono un comune denominatore. In un mondo in cui le mode ormai
dettano le direzioni, purtroppo anche nell’arte che invece dovrebbe
essere libera da ogni sorta di condizionamento, ascoltare Fantin e
Castelli diventa come una boccata di ossigeno, perché si percepisce
chiaramente il loro profondo amore per la musica e quel sano piacere nel
divertirsi con le note. Due musicisti che non hanno timore di mostrare
la propria anima e letteralmente giocare con Duke, Mingus e Monk…scusate
se è poco!”

“I had the chance to play with Alessandro Castelli at a few gigs,
and he impressed me favourably with his impeccable preparation as an
instrumentalist and musician. Equipped with a nice sound and a fluid and
articulate phrasing, he finds himself comfortable both in Jazz and
Classical Music. In this recording we can hear Castelli in an unusual
duo (trombone and piano) with the good pianist Rudy Fantin, and his
qualities emerge brilliantly. The repertoire ranges from some originals
written by Alessandro to well known jazz standards such as Monk’s “Round
Midnight”, followed by other compositions by Mingus, Randy Weston,
Abdullah Ibrahim and Charlie Haden. Particularly inspired and effective
are the pieces leaning towards a more Gospel character, such as Charlie
Haden’s “Silence” and “Spiritual”, along with the moving “The Wedding”
by Abdullah Ibrahim. “Spiritual”, the track that ends the album, make
use of the FVG Gospel Choir, arranged by Fantin, in a really effective
manner. “Bells”, the first piece of the album, is a really original and
chromatic blues in F written by Alessandro, and his interval phrasing
reminds me of some of Antony Braxton’s compositions. “Reincarnation of a
Love Bird”, by Charlie Mingus, has an interesting introduction that
Alessandro plays with a mute called “plunger”, and contains citations
from Luciano Berio’s “Sequenza V”. The unusual combination between
Mingus and Berio is due to the fact that both compositions has the world
“Clown” in common – title of the Mingus album contains that song, and
the Clown Grock to which Berio dedicate his “Sequenza”-. “E la chiamano
Estate”, a nice piece by Bruno Martino, and a ballad by Kay Windings –
great American trombonist with whom I had the pleasure of touring a few
years back – are the other pieces in the album”.

“Ho avuto l’occasione di suonare con Alessandro Castelli in qualche
concerto e mi ha impressionato favorevolmente per la sua impeccabile
preparazione come strumentista e musicista.Dotato di un bel suono e di
un fraseggio fluido ed articolato si trova a suo agio sia nel Jazz che
nella Musica Classica.In questa registrazione possiamo ascoltare
Castelli in un insolito duo (trombone e pianoforte) con il bravo
pianista Rudy Fantin e le sue qualità emergono in modo brillante.Il
repertorio spazia da alcuni brani originali scritti da Alessandro a
standard Jazz conosciuti quali “Round’ Midnight” di Monk, seguiti da
altri brani scritti da Mingus, Randy Weston, Abdullah Ibrahim e Charlie
Haden.Particolarmente ispirati e riusciti sono i brani con un carattere
più Gospel quali “Silence” e “Spiritual” di Charlie Haden insieme al
commovente “The Wedding” di Abdullah Ibrahim. “Spiritual”, il brano che
chiude l’album, si avvale del FVG Gospel Choir arrangiato da Fantin in
modo molto efficace.“Bells”, il primo brano della raccolta, è un blues
in Fa molto originale e cromatico scritto da Alessandro ed il suo
fraseggio intervallare mi ricorda certe composizioni di Antony
Braxton.“Reincarnation of a Love Bird”, di Charlie Mingus, ha una
interessante introduzione che Alessandro suona con una sordina chiamata
“plunger” e contiene delle citazioni della “Sequenza V” di Luciano
Berio. L’accostamento inusuale fra Mingus e Berio è dovuto al fatto
ambedue le composizioni hanno in comune la parola “Clown”, titolo
dell’album di Mingus che conteneva questo brano, ed il Clown Grock al
quale Berio aveva dedicato la sua “Sequenza”. Completano il CD “ E la
chiamano Estate”, un bel brano di Bruno Martino, ed una ballad di Kay
Winding (un grande trombonista americano con il quale ho avuto il
piacere di effettuare un tour diversi anni fa).
