Questo è il posto dove scrivo alcuni pensieri che mi riempiono in occasione di avvenimenti significativi della mia vita, quindi è più un flusso di coscienza che altro.
HIC SUNT LEONES
L’ esperienza del Music and Arts Global è talmente articolata come concept e contenuti, da render necessari più punti di analisi.
Edwin Hawkins, per gli italiani solitamente è noto per esser il compositore del brano Gospel più conosciuto nella penisola, ossia l’ autore di “Oh, Happy Day” (solista Dorothy Combs Morrison). Si quella della pubblicità ’80 dell’ Asti Cinzano… Negli Stati Uniti, lui assieme alla sua famiglia è una vera e propria leggenda, come il fratello Walter o Tramaine, moglie di Walter. Oltre ad esser un innovatore a livello musicale rispetto alla scrittura delle voci, Hawkins è stato accompagnato da incredibili musicisti, ad esempio il produttore e multi strumentista Joel Smith. Edwin è anche il fondatore del Music and Arts Seminar, ossia un workshop itinerante che nel corso degli anni, ha fatto conoscere il Gospel e la sua musica, lasciandoci parecchie incisioni discografiche.
Lawrence è l’ erede prossimo di una tradizione meravigliosa che parte da molto più lontano, passa per le sue radici e segue la crescita dell’ albero verso i frutti di Hawkins, delle Clark Sisters, Andrae Crouch, Richard Smallwood e moltissimi altri.La sua cifra è la profondità, l’ eleganza musicale che ne ha fatto un marchio distinguibile fra gli autori e produttori di Gospel. Addirittura per passaggio di consegne dallo stesso Hawkins, Lawrence porta a Londra il Music and Arts ed aggiunge la parola Global, ad intendere l’ estensione del pensiero originario verso il mondo intero.
Grazie all’ aiuto e alle spalle di Volney Morgan, Pastore e direttore londinese, arrivavano in Inghilterra direttori, solisti, musicisti, coristi di estrema qualità, tutti uniti nel portare questa cultura nel Vecchio Continente, probabilmente nella maniera migliore, intelligente e profonda. Parlo da italiano: spesso assistiamo ad espressioni dello show business natalizio strepitoso e coreografico, ma lasciano a volte il dubbio sull’ autenticità e sulla profondità sia della vocazione, che del messaggio religioso originante. Di fatto oggi l’ ammontare della bibliografia, le testimonianze dirette su YouTube, le registrazioni e la conoscenza diretta della cultura, aiutano a capire meglio la grandiosità del movimento Gospel afroamericano in tutte le sue espressioni.Come in altri ambiti, l’ ignoranza non è più ammissibile. Ecco, quello che nel Music and Arts Global immediatamente colpisce l’ italiano (euroscettico) che spesso c’è in me, è che non è fatto per incassare più soldi possibile, o visibilità, colpire per la location o la superficie sensazionalistica, quanto per far immerger tutti in questa esperienza e far star tutti, ma proprio tutti, a proprio agio…
Dove le parole sono attente, dove lo spirito è alto quanto il messaggio.
Se ci sono parole, hanno un contenuto, non solo calligrafia.
Se c’è un segno è di condivisione. Direte che questo è quello che si trova in qualsiasi evento corale o workshop anche in Italia. Bah, dopo averne fatti o tenuti direi parecchi…, come pianista, o direttore, o cantante, o semplicemente curioso… posso dire che noi siamo su un Satellite che ruota attorno alla propria orbita e che non tocca il pianeta vicino, a causa della forza di gravità. Questa forza di gravità è stata annullata dal magnetismo di Lawrence che ha attirato al Music and Arts Global, tutti i satelliti interessati. Protagonista quindi non lo spettacolo, quanto la connessione attraverso la Parola e la vibrazione comune.
Sembra poco, ma la differenza è stata colossale.
Quindi 3 giorni, a partire da giovedì 27 aprile, caratterizzati dall’ allestimento di numerosi brani della produzione in particolare di Lawrence, Hawkins, LaValley e Starks. La volontà di portar a compiuta comprensione una realtà molto sottovalutata e conosciuta superficialmente dalle nostre parti. Sul palco 6 cantanti pazzeschi capaci di onorare le esigenze raffinatissime di Lawrence: Aarion Pace Rhodes, figlia di LaShun Pace, Lena Sungbyrd Starks, Malonie Daniels, Blanche McAllister e Israel J.Allen. I direttori che si sono alternati sono stati tutti magnifici e oltre le aspettative: da Jeffrey LaValley (autore di Revelation 19:1), DeWayne Woods a Grier Jonanthan, lo stesso Lawrence, Karen Gibson. Solisti? Tutti i 6 coristi si sono espressi anche in questa veste, poi ci sono stati Anthony Brown, Rodney Posey, Ted Winn, Vincent Bohannan e molti altri! All Stars Band: Cedric Thompson (Grammy Award Winner), Derrick Hall (15 anni MD di Edwin Hawkins),Calvin Rodgers, Maurice Fitzgerald, Joey Woolfalk… Un sogno per qualsiasi musicista.Una illustre dimostrazione del concetto di esser supportivi e al servizio.
Cori e cantanti dagli USA oltre agli artisti già citati, intervenuti di proposito per l’ evento.Cori dall’ Irlanda, Latvia, Spagna, Svizzera, Danimarca, Svezia e dall’ Italia?
Invitati direttamente da Lawrence e selezionati per lo showcase del venerdì sera! Di fatto ambasciatori inconsapevoli, volenti o nolenti della Penisola. Per vari motivi, eravamo solo in 5, ossia 4 voci (SMAT) più me, come rappresentanza del ventennale ensemble. Agli amici rimasti a casa sono arrivate tonnellate di testimonianze via chat, della meraviglia che abbiamo vissuto, così ci siam sentiti più vicini.
Quali sono stati i momenti salienti del meeting?
- A livello musicologico abbiamo assistito ad una magistrale lezione della Dr. Alisha Jones, intitolata “Lining the Hymn”, docente alla Cambridge University, altre che cantante lirica (con noi 5 si esprimeva in italiano).
- Il Dr Watts improvvisato sul palco da chi ce l’ ha nel DNA da generazioni…
- Lo Showcase dei cori ospiti.
- Lo studio delle linee vocali del bridge di Oh, Happy Day, nella versione originale di Edwin Hawkins, non come si fa normalmente (non Db Db Db I Ab )
- Il Musician’s Workshop: INCREDIBILE!
- Jeffrey LaValley: Unico.
- L’ apertura dell’ evento di chiusura del meeting ad opera del Kent University Gospel Choir
Da Direttore artistico di The NuVoices Project, la storia ventennale di questa formazione, il pensiero su cosa proporre ad una platea così attenta, preparata e di fatto molto accogliente, si è risolta velocemente: in dote ai leoni del Gospel afroamericano ha senso portare con orgoglio, una porzione della nostra tradizione.
Nell’ agosto del 2003 ho arrangiato “Signore delle cime” di Bepi de Marzi, un brano a cui tutto il Nord Italia è legatissimo. Quella volta ho cercato di scrivere qualcosa che ispirasse le vette delle montagne e i sentimenti che il testo e la melodia mi suggeriva. A distanza di 20 anni (e dopo 2 mail di congratulazioni dall’ autore stesso per l’ arrangiamento), rimane una brano che ci rappresenta e che ha senso condividere oltre le Alpi, anche grazie allo studio sulla vocalità e sulla musica moderna operato in tutto questo periodo.Avendo una porzione dell’ intero ensemble, ma coperti a livello di sezioni (1 Soprano, 1 Mezzosoprano, 1 Contralto e 1 Tenore), abbiamo azzardato questo brano piano e voci, in mezzo a meravigliosi gruppi corali di almeno 20 persone accompagnate o con band intera o con basi, alternatesi prima e dopo di noi.
Non potete immaginare l’ emozione e l’ incredulità.
La performance ha suscitato applausi durante l’ esecuzione, compresa la standing ovation che trovate nel finale del video.
Abbiamo eseguito anche l’ unico brano a cappella della serata: Go Tell It On The Mountain, come nostro omaggio verso la tradizione afroamericana.
I Living Water, spagnoli, hanno omaggiato Lawrence con un suo brano tradotto in spagnolo. Mi ha colpito in particolare la formazione diretta da Volney Morgan.Bravissima la band e centralissimi tutti!
Ma vogliamo parlare dell’ emozione pura nel conoscere, ascoltare ed esser condotti da Jeffrey LaValley in persona!??! Revelation 19:1 è sicuramente uno dei brani che i cori Gospel italiani conoscono meglio, ancora dai tempi gloriosi di Bob Singleton. La luce che brilla ancora negli occhi di LaValley, può orientare tutti noi ancora per molto tempo nei tunnel bui.

La serata conclusiva è stata un sogno.
Rimanendo a fianco dei musicisti per tutto il workshop, ho potuto vivere l’ esperienza da basso/baritono europeo, per la prima volta, di fianco una un altro cantante che adoro: Leonardo Bucciol, che conosco da 25 anni e da 25 anni canta con me. Da lui ho imparato un sacco di cose, ma l’ esperienza di vivere, cantare, ballare, emozionarsi uno di fianco all’ altro, in un workshop di questa portata … mai ancora vissuta. Esser nel coro ad intonare Oh, Happy Day, ascoltando i solisti Bazil Meade e Kristīne Prauliņa, direttrice del Riga Gospel Choir, è stato parecchio emozionante.
E Donald Lawrence?!?!?
Una persona gentile, magnetica, profonda, preparata, acuta, mai sopra le righe, attenta, umile, sensibile e umana.
I contenuti etici/spirituali, musicali, culturali hanno raggiunto livelli sinceramente mai visti e/o percepiti.
Non di meno passare questi giorni con mia moglie Giuliana, Antonella, Leo e Lucia, è stata un’ esperienza particolarmente divertente.Come quando aspetti da 5 anni che si realizzi un sogno.
Ho assorbito più vibrazioni in questo flusso di mezza settimana, che nei precedenti decenni di pratica e vita musicale.

HIC SUNT LEONES
The Music and Arts Global experience is so complex as a concept and content that it requires multiple points of analysis.
For Italians, Edwin Hawkins is usually known as the composer of the most famous Gospel song in the peninsula: “Oh, Happy Day” (Dorothy Combs Morrison as lead soloist). Yes, the one from the ’80s Asti Cinzano advertisement… In the United States, he and his family are a true legend, as is his brother Walter or Tramaine, Walter’s wife. In addition to being an innovator in terms of choral writing, Hawkins had incredible musicians as sidemans, such as producer and multi-instrumentalist Joel Smith. Edwin is also the founder of the Music and Arts Seminar, a traveling workshop that, over the years, has introduced Gospel and its music, realising several recordings.
Lawrence is the next heir of a wonderful tradition that goes back much further, passes through his roots, and follows the tree’s growth towards the fruits of Hawkins, the Clark Sisters, Andrae Crouch, Richard Smallwood, and many others. His signature is depth, musical elegance that has made him a distinguishable brand among Gospel authors and producers. Even through the passing of the torch from Hawkins himself, Lawrence brings Music and Arts to London and adds the word Global to it, intending to extend the original thought to the entire world.
Thanks to the help and support of Volney Morgan, a London Pastor and director. Directors, soloists, musicians, and extremely talented choristers arrived in England, all united in bringing this culture to the Old Continent, probably in the best, most intelligent, and profound way. Speaking as an Italian, we often witness stunning and choreographed Christmas show business expressions, but they sometimes leave doubt about the authenticity and depth of both the vocation and the originating religious message. In fact, today the amount of bibliography, direct testimonials on YouTube, recordings, and direct knowledge of the culture help us better understand the grandeur of the African-American Gospel movement in all its expressions. As in other fields, ignorance is no longer acceptable. Here’s what immediately strikes the Italian (eurosceptic) that is often in me about Music and Arts Global: it’s not done to make as much money as possible or to gain visibility, to hit the location or sensationalistic surface, but to immerse everyone in this experience and make everyone, but just everyone, comfortable… feeling good and accepted.
Where words are attentive, the Spirit is as high as the Message.
If there are Words, they have Content, not just calligraphy.
If there is a sign, it is of sharing. You might say that this is what you find in any choral event or workshop in Italy, too. Well, after having done or held quite a few of them, as a pianist, director, singer, or just a curious person… I can say that we are on a satellite that revolves around its own orbit and does not touch the neighboring planet due to the force of gravity. This force of gravity has been canceled out by Lawrence’s magnetism, which attracted all interested satellites to Music and Arts Global. Therefore, the focus is not on the show, but on the connection through the Word and the common vibration.
It may seem small, but the difference has been colossal.
So, three days, starting from Thursday 27th April, characterized by the staging of numerous Songs, particularly from Lawrence, Hawkins, LaValley and Starks The intention was to fully understand a reality that is very underestimated and superficially known in our parts. On stage were six crazy singers capable of honoring Lawrence’s sophisticated requirements: Aarion Pace Rhodes, daughter of LaShun Pace, Lena Sungbyrd Starks, Malonie Daniels, Blanche McAllister and Israel J.Allen. The directors who took turns were all magnificent and beyond expectations: from Jeffrey LaValley (author of Revelation 19:1), DeWayne Woods a Grier Jonanthan, Lawrence himself, and Karen Gibson. Soloists? All 6 choristers also performed in this capacity, then there were Anthony Brown, Rodney Posey, Ted Winn, Vincent Bohannan, and many others! All Stars Band: Cedric Thompson (Grammy Award Winner), Derrick Hall (15-years MD of Edwin Hawkins),Calvin Rodgers, Maurice Fitzgerald, Joey Woolfalk… A dream team for any musician.The real idea of being supportive and in service for God.
Choirs and singers from the USA in addition to the already mentioned artists, intentionally present for the event. Choirs from Ireland, Latvia, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Sweden, and … Italy?
Directly invited by Lawrence and selected for the Friday night showcase! In fact, unwitting ambassadors, willing or not, of the Peninsula. For various reasons, we were only 5:
4 voices (SMAT) plus me, representing the 20-year ensemble.
What were the highlights of the meeting?
- On a musicological level, we witnessed a masterful lesson from Dr. Alisha Jones , entitled “Lining the Hymn,” a teacher at Cambridge University, as well as an opera singer (with us 5, she expressed herself in Italian).
- Dr Watts improvised on stage by those who have it in their DNA for generations…
- The showcase of guest choirs.
- The study of the vocal lines of the bridge of Oh, Happy Day, in the original version of Edwin Hawkins, not as it is normally done (not Db Db Db I Ab )
- The Musician’s Workshop: Unbelievable experience!!!
- Jeffrey LaValley: The one and only!
- The opening of the closing event of the meeting by the Kent University Gospel Choir
As Artistic Director of The NuVoices Project, the 20-year history of this ensemble, the thought on what to propose to such an attentive, prepared, and in fact very welcoming audience, was quickly resolved: as a gift to the lions of African American Gospel, it makes sense to proudly bring a portion of our italian tradition.
In August 2003, I arranged “Signore delle cime” by Bepi de Marzi, a song that the entire North of Italy is very attached to. That time I tried to write something that would inspire the peaks of the mountains and the feelings that the lyrics and melody suggested to me. Twenty years later (and after 2 congratulations emails from the author himself for the arrangement), it remains a song that represents us and that makes sense to share beyond the Alps, also thanks to the study on vocal and modern music conducted during this period. Having a portion of the entire ensemble, but covered at the section level (1 Soprano, 1 Mezzosoprano, 1 Contralto, and 1 Tenor), we dared to perform this song with only piano and voices, amidst wonderful choral groups of at least 20 people accompanied by either an entire band or bases, alternating before and after us.
You can’t imagine our emotion and incredulity.
The performance received applause during the execution, including the standing ovation you find at the end of the video.
We also performed the only a cappella song of the evening: “Go Tell It On The Mountain,” as our tribute to the African American tradition.
The Living Water, a Spanish group, paid tribute to Lawrence with one of his songs translated into Spanish. I was particularly impressed with the group directed by Volney Morgan. The band was excellent and everyone was essential!
But can we talk about the pure emotion of meeting, listening to, and being led by Jeffrey LaValley in person?!?! “Revelation 19:1” is definitely one of the songs that Italian gospel choirs know best, dating back to the glorious days of Bob Singleton. The light still shining in LaValley’s eyes can guide all of us through dark tunnels for a long time.

The final evening was a dream. By staying alongside the musicians throughout the workshop, for the first time as a European bass/baritone, I was able to experience singing alongside another singer I adore: Leonardo Bucciol, whom I’ve known for 25 years and have been singing with for 25 years. I have learned a lot from him, but the experience of living, singing, dancing, and getting emotional together in a workshop of this magnitude… I have never experienced anything like it before. Being in the choir and singing “Oh, Happy Day,” while listening to soloists Bazil Meade and Kristīne Prauliņa, the director of the Riga Gospel Choir, was quite emotional.
And how about Donald Lawrence?!?!?
He is a kind, magnetic, profound, prepared, acute, never over the top, attentive, humble, sensitive, and human person.
The ethical/spiritual, musical, and cultural content reached levels that I have sincerely never seen or perceived before.
Not to mention spending these days with my wife Giuliana, Antonella, Leo, and Lucia, was a particularly fun experience. It was like waiting for a dream to come true after 5 years.
I absorbed more vibrations in this half-week flow than in previous decades of practice and musical life.
